Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board Pushes Foxwoods Casino South
Foxwoods has been in danger of losing their casino license in Pennsylvania, and late this past week, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board told Foxwoods exactly what they expected from the gaming company.
"We do not want to hear that there are other sites that you want to look at," said Gaming Board Chairman, Gregory Fajt, "We expect you (Foxwoods) to move, and move quickly, or we'll yank the license."
Foxwoods was asking to relocate their casino to Center City, but the Gaming Board voted unanimously to keep Foxwoods in South Philadelphia. Foxwoods wanted to build a casino at the old Strawbridge and Clothier store.
Even with the casino having to stay in South Philadelphia, there is opposition. Moyor Nutter spoke of how the Delaware riverfront was not a good place for the casino. He claims it will cause much congestion, and Foxwoods had agreed.
City agencies have tried to stall the project for the Delaware River. City Councilmen have fought against the site being used for a casino, and the agencies have held up permits. Now, Foxwoods will have to move forward with the project or risk losing their license.
At the minimum, Foxwoods was ordered to have the 1,500 slot machine facility open by May of 2011. The current Foxwoods license was extended until that time.
