In most states, politicians see the money that can be generated from casino gambling and it is enough to convince them to change laws. Many casinos are being built around the US as a result of these expanded gambling laws.

What usually is not expanded in these states, however, is treatment options for problem gambling. It is an area that the National Problem Gambling Center has tried to get states to face head on.

Pennsylvania is one of the states that may have listened. For whatever reason, Pennsylvania is taking a proactive approach to helping problem gamblers. With more casinos on the way, the state is being commended for their efforts.

"With most states expanding gambling and forgetting about their responsibility to protect gambling addicts, Pennsylvania should be exemplified for their efforts in that area," said observer Thomas Drundle.

National Problem Gambling Awareness Week is the first week of March and Pennsylvania is already preparing to spread the word about gambling addiction. The Department of Health in the state has approved forty two treatment providers to help with counselling for problem gamblers.

"For most people, gambling is a fun and harmless form of entertainment. But for some, it can be a devastating addiction," said Health Secretary Everette James, "We want to make sure people are aware of available resources and remind them this is not a battle they will have to fight alone."
