Pennsylvania Senate Passes Casino Bill to Cut Out Corruption
More than two years ago the state of Pennsylvania legalized slot machines and now they have over 61,000 of them, making them one of the biggest slot states in America. Friday the state's Senate passed a bill that will seemingly cut out the corruption that runs rampant in the industry.
The bill that now heads to Gov. Ed Rendell, who is expected to sign it, is noted for a deletion of a provision that allows public officials to own up to a 1% piece of a casino.
The bill also includes a provision which would require that the state attorney general forms a gambling-crimes unit to cut down on crime increased by the introduction of slots to Pennsylvania.
Another important part of the bill deletes a provision that used to say state slot parlors could only purchase slot machines from in-state slot vendors.
The fixed bill went through heated debate for two years before finally being passed Friday afternoon. It is intended to turn around the image of corruption in the industry in Pennsylvania that is not seen in other states that allow gaming.
The first slots parlor in the state is expected to open Nov. 14 at the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs racetrack in northeast Pennsylvania.
