Pennsylvania Slot Gambling Revenue Rises In February
Pennsylvania lawmakers clearly have had a vision of the state becoming the top casino gambling destination in the Northeast when they legalized table games for their casinos earlier this year. It turns out, the casinos may already have been on the verge of being number one.
Slot revenues for February were released by the Gaming Control Board, and for the second consecutive month, it was good news for the state. Revenue was up almost sixteen percent from the same period in 2009.
The addition of two new casinos helped propel those numbers, however, with many casinos having a decrease in revenue from the previous February. In all, the nine casinos offering slots had revenue of $168,279,514 this February. Last year, the seven casinos that were operating brought in $145,579,665.
The weather played a large part in the revenue decreases of casinos that were open both years. Massive snowstorms ravaged the Northeast for much of this winter, causing several casinos to have to close their doors for periods at a time.
In December, slot revenue at Pennsylvania casinos was higher than Atlantic City casinos for the first time in history. With the AC casino industry struggling, Pennsylvania lawmakers have seen this as an opportune time to make a move.
Table game gambling is set to begin in the summer, and once the table games are added, Pennsylvania will become a formidable opponent to New jersey for gambling customers in the Northeast. Other states in the area, such as New York, Connecticut, and Delaware have also expanded their gambling options recently.
