Penny Slot Gambling Proving To Be Big Revenue Producer For Casinos
The economy has taken a bite out of one of the most stable industries in the US, casino gambling. It used to be a widespread opinion that casinos were immune to any economic crisis, but during the current recession, that has proven to be untrue.
Penny slot gambling, however, is becoming a major money maker for casinos. In Missouri, penny slots accounted for over half of casino revenue in 2008. People are tightening what they spend on entertainment and that is making the penny slots more attractive.
"My husband has recently lost his job and it is making things a little more difficult for us," said Heather Wells, "But we still enjoy going to the casino, only now when we go we just sit and play the penny machines for hours and spend no more than twenty or thirty bucks each."
That sentiment is being echoed throughout the country. In Illinois, their penny slot revenue grew last year from six percent in 2006 to twelve percent in 2008. This year so far, the penny slot revenue is moving at a fifteen percent clip.
Although they are called penny slots, the revenue generated can be accumulated quickly. The player bets at either a one or two cents a line pace. They do have the options on some machines, however, of playing enough lines that they can play up to ten dollars a spin.
"There are options to play higher stakes," said Wells when asked about the penny machine limits, "but we just stay under control and play for recreation at maybe forty or fifty cents a spin."
