People With Gambling Problems Staying Away From AC Casinos

When people with gambling problems want to stay out of casinos it is a clear sign that the industry is hurting in Atlantic City. First it was the high rollers that left, now it is all of the people who are trying to deal with their addictions.

In the past three years, the amount of people that have signed up for a self-exclusion program in the state of New Jersey has doubled. Recently the list added its 1,000th name.

"the self-exclusion program in New Jersey is working as it was intended. It is keeping people from falling into deep holes both in their personal and professional lives. The program should be used as a model for other states who are interested in helping problem gamblers,' said observer Kylie Riekel.

There are several different options for gamblers who want their names on the list. They can sign up temporarily, for one year, or, they can choose a longer ban such as five years. Of course they also have the option of placing themselves on the list for a lifetime.

For the program to work, Atlantic City casinos must comply with some of the rules that come along with the list. They may not allow anyone of the list on the casino floor. They also cannot contact these people through any type of mailer or other promotional pamphlets.

While the program has become a starting point for many states, more intervention is needed. Educational programs are needed to alert the public on the dangers of problem gambling, and casinos need to be more aware of who is gambling at their facilities.

In New Jersey there is a fine for casinos who do not comply with the rules of the program. The money brought in from the fines goes towards education and treatment programs.
