A heavy storm has ravaged the Northeast and left hundreds of thousands of Washington D.C. residents without power. The Pepco power outage has also left hundreds of gamblers at home, waiting for the storm to pass before heading to Maryland casinos.
The storm hit the Washington area in Sunday and several different counties were without power. The biggest outage occurred in Montgomery, where an estimated 200,000 residents were blacked out. Prince George County had 49,000 without power.
"When our system is damaged by severe weather, Pepco repairs equipment using a system of priorities that has been developed taking into account public safety, community needs and the nature of the electric system," said Pepco, in a press release shortly after the storm hit in Maryland.
Casinos around the US have been hurt by severe weather in the past week. Gamblers have been unable to leave their homes in some areas of the country. In Iowa, residents were forced to evacuate when a dam broke over the weekend. The dam break led to decreased revenue at several Iowa casinos.
Maryland voters gave the right to casino gambling back in November of 2008. The process to get slots and other casino games into the state has been lengthy, and lawmakers are currently discussing the possibility of even more expansion. The Maryland Lottery Commission currently regulates the gambling in the state.
Neighboring states have been beating Maryland to the punch when it comes to expansion. Pennsylvania has added table games at their casinos, while Delaware has added table games and sports betting. New Jersey is set to completely revamp their gaming industry, which has been devastated by the economic recession.
