President Casino Workers Hope To Stay In Gambling Industry
Employees at the President Casino in St. Louis, Missouri, knew that the day was going for a long time. The casino is closing on July 1st for good, and there is the possibility the workers could be left unemployed at that time.
On Friday, over 200 workers held a rally outside of the casino to protest their dismissal. The employees believe they should be reassigned to one of Pinnacle Entertainment's other casinos in St. Louis.
Negotiations on the matter and severance pay will begin on Tuesday between union leaders and Pinnacle Entertainment officials. The hope for the union is that the gaming company gives in to their demands and keeps them employed.
Even if that is the case, it is unlikely that all of the workers will be able to keep their same full time positions. Pinnacle's other casinos already have employees, and fitting the President employees in could become a tall task. Still, the company does not intend to leave the workers high and dry.
According to Pinnacle, the company held a job fair in December for President Casino workers. The company claims only a couple dozen of the employees showed up. Pinnacle is currently working on a job fair that will feature other casino operators in the St. Louis area, and it will be available only for President Casino workers.
Originally, Pinnacle was set on battling the Missouri Gaming Commission's decision to close the President Casino. After a round of negotiations, however, Pinnacle agreed to close the casino and give the gaming license back to the state. In exchange, the state dropped penalties accrued by the struggling casino.
