Problem Gambling Awareness Week Begins Sunday In Florida

Lawmakers in the state of Florida are in the process of negotiating a new gambling compact with the Seminole Indians that would be part of major gambling expansion. That is one of the reasons that gambling addiction awareness must be spread in the state.

On Sunday, Problem Gambling Awareness week begins in Florida. Governor Charlie Crist has seen the need for education of the public in this area, so the awareness week was created. It will run through March 13th.

Among the groups that will be helping spread awareness will be the United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse. The group is a partner of the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling, and will be located in Pembroke Pines giving out information on problem gambling today and next Saturday.

Each year, a different aspect of problem gambling is the focus of the week-long campaign. This year, that focus is on the effect that gambling addiction can have on a family. The official theme is, "Shining the Light on Problem Gambling."

Florida has become one of the more proactive states in the country when it comes to gambling expansion. In addition to the deal that is being created with the Seminoles, the state also has expanded gambling at pari-mutuel facilities in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Internet gambling has become one of the topics of lawmakers around the US, and Florida legislators are also discussing the possibility of regulating online poker. Along with the expansion comes the unwanted side effects of increased gambling addiction potential. That is why Governor Crist and the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling have worked hard to make this week a success.
