Problem Gambling Now Being Addressed With Research From Yale
A recent study done at Harvard have suggested that gambling is not quite the dark force that opponents make it out to be. With gambling options growing around the country, it is becoming increasingly important that top universities begin to study the issue.
That may be why Yale University and the University of Minnesota will be the host of two Centers of Excellence in Gambling Research. The centers were created by the National Center for Responsible Gaming.
Along with the expanded gambling that has taken place, there has also been a need for research into gambling. How does it effect individuals? What is the effects on society? Is it good or bad for the country? These are all questions that have to be answered.
At Yale, there is a familiar face that will be the head of the Gambling Research Center. Marc Potenza, M.D. will be conducting clinical trials for treatment of problem gambling through the use of the drug naltrexone.
The Center at the University of Minnesota will have a different focus. They will attempt to identify what makes young adults develop pathological gambling problems. Researchers will be working together on that project.
The two centers will be funded for three years through grants. The ultimate goal is to find ways to help deal with long term effects of gambling, and $402,500 grants are being given to each school.
