Public Support for Gambling Dips
A Pew Research Center survey finds a backlash against gambling among U.S. citizens as states become more dependent on the revenue. Seventy percent of those surveyed said that legalized gambling encourages people to bet over their heads. In a 1989 Gallup Poll, 62 percent of the public said that.

The number of people who say they enjoy placing bets also dropped from 34 percent to 23 percent, and the percentage of the population playing the ponies or betting sports is down. But casino gambling and playing slot machines have increased sharply with the expansion of legal gambling. Gambling is now legal in some form in 48 of the 50 states, with only Hawaii and Utah bucking the trend.
