R.I. Senate Approves Casino Amendment
The Rhode Island Senate has approved a constitutional amendment that paves the way for the Narragansett Indian Tribe and Harrah's Entertainment to build and run a casino. The amendment would exclude the Narragansetts and their business partner from a constitutional provision requiring the state to run all lotteries, including casinos. Casino supporters say it would provide the state with millions of dollars in gambling revenues and thousands of jobs. But critics say the income is not guaranteed and a casino could steal customers from entertainment venues and restaurants in downtown Providence.
