The US has come a long way in the past couple of decades when it comes to views on casino gambling. A new Rasmussen report shows just how far the country has come, with even Texans now in favor of more gambling.
A Rasmussen survey that was conducted in the state of Texas shows that fifty-seven percent of those polled favor legalizing casino gambling. That is a staggering number when considering that Texas is one of the most conservative states in the country.
The economy has affected Texas much like many other states, and the budget deficit is growing. The Texans that were polled believe that casino gambling would be a way to increase revenue to balance the budget without increasing taxes. Sixty-eight percent of the respondents opposed new taxes.
Ten percent are still undecided on the gambling issue, but may have to make their minds up in the near future. Texas lawmakers are considering legalizing casinos, and ultimately it would be the people of the Lone Star state that make the final decision.
Thirty-three percent of the Texans polled showed their conservative values by opposing casino gambling expansion. While casino gaming has been discussed in the past, it has not had the kind of momentum that is building in recent years in Texas.
Other states have taken a similarly slow route towards casinos. Ohio voters turned down casino gambling proposals several times in the past, but approved a plan that was on last year's ballot. Now, four casinos will be built in Ohio. Florida lawmakers have recently signed a gambling compact with the Seminole Indians, reversing years of opposition to expanded gambling in the Sunshine State.
The Rasmussen poll was taken on May 13th, and 500 potential voters were asked questions regarding casino gambling and increased taxes.
