Rendell Doubts Legislators Will produce Table Game Law
Governor Ed Rendell was so confident that legislators would produce a table games law, that he signed a budget with revenue from table games at state casinos included. Now Rendell is having second thoughts.
Last week Rendell issued a deadline of January 8th for lawmakers to agree on a new table game gambling law. He threatened that if no law was in place by that date, then there would be layoffs from state jobs.
The deadline has now been in place for a week, and there has been no progress on any new legislation. It has caused Rendell to reconsider whether table games will ever come to Pennsylvania casinos. he was not speaking in the same authoritative voice when asked about the prospects of a new law.
"I have waited and waited and waited on this," said Rendell, as reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "Right now I am not sure we will ever have a table games bill."
That would be bad news for residents of Pennsylvania and the state's educational system. Funds had been withheld from state universities up until last week, and the colleges were hoping that the table game gambling would provide even more of a revenue source.
There have been some issues resolved by members of the House and Senate, but there is one issue where there remains no compromise. Some members of the legislature want an additional resort casino license in the state, and others are balking at the idea.
The Senate so far has held firm and does not want the additional license. The House believes that an additional license is needed because there are several areas vying for the final of two resort casino licenses that are available.
