Rep. Taylor says Voters Should Decide on Casino Proposal
Rep. Gene Taylor says voters should decide the fate of a proposal by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians to build a casino in Jackson County. The tribe operates two casino resorts in Neshoba County and own nearly 100 acres along Mississippi 57 near Interstate 10 in Jackson County.
In a recent letter, Chief Phillip Martin asked Jackson County supervisors to call a referendum in 2008, the same year as the presidential elections, to determine if there is community support for gaming. "Let the people decide," said Taylor, D-Miss., who spoke Monday to about 50 residents at a town hall meeting at the Ocean Springs City Hall. "That's what democracy is all about."
