Perception of Luck Linked to Problem Casino Gambling
People who feel they are lucky could be more prone to problem gambling and less likely to seek treatment, according to a study presented at an international gambling conference. Researchers in Ottawa created a "virtual reality" casino, put university students in virtual reality helmets and let them gamble as part of an experiment to determine whether their perceptions of luck affect gambling behavior.
Strong beliefs in luck are linked to symptoms of pathological gambling, the researchers found during the study, which also surveyed the Carleton University students. The results suggest that the luckier people believe they are, the less likely they are to seek treatment.
