Rhode Island Lawmakers Force Gambling On Twin River
The Twin River racetrack in Lincoln, Rhode Island, expected that the government would help them with their financial situation by expanding gambling in the state. Not only has that not happened, but lawmakers are now forcing their will on Twin River.
The racetrack will be forced to open and expand their greyhound racing schedule even though they are struggling financially. This comes after lawmakers passed the Bill on Friday, and it means more racing is coming to Twin River.
There was some good news for the track. They will now be allowed to offer gambling twenty-four hours a day. Currently, they were only allowed to offer around the clock gambling on holidays and every weekend.
"We commend our lawmakers for choosing to protect jobs and taxpayer revenue rather than lining the pockets of big banks," said Jennifer Bramley, spokeswoman for the Rhode Island Greyhound Owners association.
The owners of Twin River have already filed for bankruptcy protection, and they are hoping that the expanded gambling hours will help make up some of the revenue that has been lost because of the recession.
Rhode Island has been one of the states that has considered expanding their gambling options. Lawmakers have been unable to agree on a way to expand gambling, so the issue has been shelved for now.
