A topless pool on the heart of Sin City could only have caused problems, but the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino decided it was a good idea. The resort opened the Sapphire pool, and began allowing customers to enjoy the sun topless.

Now, after a routine integrity check by officers, the pool has been shut down,. Arrests were made this past weekend by the police for illegal drugs and prostitution, not exactly the image the resort had in mind when it opened the topless pool.

"On July 25th, 2009, the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino requested the cooperation of LVMPD in conducting a routine integrity check of the resorts topless pool area," said the Rio, in a statement, "...as a follow-up to the check conducted by LVMPD, the Rio decided to suspend the operation of its Sapphire European-style pool indefinitely."

The authorities have denied that the routine check was done at the Rio's request. Instead, they acknowledge that the Rio cooperated with the check. There were concerns when the resort opened the pool that prostitution may become a problem.

Prostitution is as big a business in Las Vegas as casino gambling. Thousands of women are around the casinos, offering services to vacationers. When the topless pool opened, it became a natural place for these prostitutes to operate their business.

In the check this past weekend, eight women were arrested and charged with prostitution. Two others were also arrested on drug charges. The remaining pools at the Rio will remain open while the Sapphire is closed.
