Casino gambling opponents may not want to examine Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Rivers Casino when they are looking for a model to use against gambling expansion. The casino is not yet even opened, but already 1,000 jobs have been created for the community.

One of the main points that gambling proponents show when they are proving their case to voters or lawmakers is the impact that a new casino can have on the unemployment rate in an area. Pittsburgh has been among the hardest cities hit in the current economic conditions, and the Rivers Casino is providing some relief.

"I know many of my friends that had lost their jobs and did not know what they were going to do," said Bryan Grelsh, "several of these friends applied at the new casino, and were offered positions. It has been a blessing."

Many other people in Pittsburgh feel the same way. The casino had over 50,000 applicants, which shows how hard times really are. Of those applicants, 1,000 people walked away with new employment. It is something that the entire city is thankful for.

"Whatever negatives they (gambling opponents) say that new casinos bring, it has not been the case here in Pittsburgh," said Walter Bouy, "all we have seen is the casino reaching out to the community."

The casino will not open until this week. It has been a long wait for Pennsylvanians. The casino was originally proposed by Don Barden, but he did not have the funding to complete the project.

After he had to shut down the project, billionaire Neil Bluhn took control of the casino. Now, finally, the establishment is ready for its opening. Barden still owns twenty percent of the casino.
