It is not often that casino resorts in Las Vegas close their doors for good. Even in tough economic times, the gaming industry has always been able to battle through the difficult economic climate and come out on the other side. This recession, however, has been different.

Many casinos have been forced to close their doors around the US, and now Las Vegas has its first casualty. The Sahara Hotel and Casino will close for good in May, with no plans to re-open in the future. It is a move that has some industry insiders stunned.

"I am shocked the Sahara is closing," said Jennifer Lee, a patron who has been going to the Sahara annually for the past five years. "That was my favorite place in Las Vegas, and now I will have to find somewhere else to go when I visit."

Lee should have no problem finding a replacement, with many other gaming establishments still operating in Sin City. If she is looking for something more upscale, both the CityCenter and Cosmopolitan have been opened in recent years, and they provide extravagant offerings for their customers.

The Cosmopolitan and CityCenter projects may have contributed to the eventual failure of the Sahara to make money. The older casinos have been hurt not only by the recession of 2008, but also by the lavish new projects that have been built in recent years. The older casinos cannot keep up with the new developmental projects in which millions of dollars was poured into their construction.

Employees of the Sahara will be looking for new jobs come May, and some of the workers have been with the casino resort for over three decades. With the economy still hurting the bottom line at Las Vegas casinos, it may be difficult for the Sahara employees to latch on with another casino.
