When gambling opponents objected to the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, their main concern was that the casino would bring increased crime to the area. Now, six months after the casino opened, it seems those anti-gambling groups were worrying for no reason.

Crime has only gone up minimally since Sands opened their doors. There has been an expected rise in certain crimes, such as minor assaults or alcohol related crimes, but it has not been enough for local law enforcement to raise the red flag.

"It is about what we expected," said Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli, as reported in the Express-Times Daily Newspaper, "We think the casino itself has been a good neighbor."

Even with the news that there has not been a major increase in crime, gambling opponents are now lining up to once again scare the public into thinking there will be a problem in the future. Their latest attempt comes because Pennsylvania lawmakers are working on legislation that would legalize table games.

The result of the table games, according to several anti-gambling advocates that CGW spoke to, will be a lower age group attending the Sands casino in Bethlehem. Along with the younger crowd, will come increased crime.

That is not a theory that proved correct the first time around, and law enforcement officials do not believe it will be the case this time either. If anything, the authorities are hoping that Sands dedicates more money towards having on duty officers to help control any projected crime increase.
