Saskatchewan Residents Spend The Most Money On Gambling
In Canada, gambling is spreading, whether it be land-based casinos or online gambling. That is good news for Saskatchewan, where, according to a recent report, residents spend the most money per household on gambling in all of Canada.
Saskatchewan leaders are trying to determine whether or not online gambling would be beneficial to the province. If the report released by Statistics Canada on Friday is any indication, Internet gambling would be a huge hit in Saskatchewan.
Residents of the province spend $720 per household on gambling in 2008. That was clearly the highest number in Canada, with Alberta second at $645. Th other end of the spectrum had Quebec households spending only $390 in the same year. The figures may soon rise with all of the new gaming options.
Saskatchewan does have an advantage over other provinces with the amount of casinos that can be found in the area. Six tribal casinos and two province-run casinos give residents plenty of available gambling opportunities. Not everyone is happy with the amount of gambling taking place.
"I think that number is appalling,' said Mary Graber. "That was over $700 that could have been spent on other avenues that may have been more beneficial to these gamblers' families." Graber claims that nobody in her household has bet in the past couple of years.
While Graber and other anti-gambling groups balked at the figures, the Saskatchewan Gaming Corp. found the numbers to be an indication of success for the casinos. The marketing strategy was credited as well as a reason that Saskatchewan led other provinces in gambling.
British Columbia has already launched an online casino, PlayNow.com. Alberta, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and other provinces are considering following in British Columbia's footsteps, into the world of Internet gambling.
