In the state of Iowa, the casino gambling industry is thriving. There are many casinos, which is why the news this past week that Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino is considering a second casino for Polk County took some people by surprise.

Now, the details of that plan are trickling out, and it is not only another casino the group is looking into. Reportedly, Prairie Meadows is also considering adding another horse racing track along with the new casino.

"It would be an entire center based on American quarter-horse racing, rodeos, equine activities," said Jonathan Swain of Peninsula Gaming, as reported on DesMoinesRegister.com, "It would support the ag industry as well as the breeds."

Prairie Meadows is attempting to slow their racing schedule, much like many tracks around the country. The industry has been hard hit by the economy, and many facilities have already closed their doors.

Prairie Meadows added casino gambling because of a failing horse racing business, but they believe that the combination could be profitable in the future. They have not gone beyond the exploratory discussions regarding a new casino and horse track.

There has been an explosion of new casinos across the entire US. With the economy struggling, casinos have provided a revenue spark for individual states. Iowa is one of the states where casinos have helped the economy through this difficult time.
