Seeking Support for Gambling
Nebraska's American Indian tribes, horse racers, county governments and even compulsive gamblers would get a slice of the pie under a casino gambling proposal backers hope to put up for a vote in November. A petition legalizing casino gambling in Nebraska is being circulated by a coalition of three Nebraska tribes. It calls for creating one casino off of reservation land, probably in Omaha, and would legalize other casinos on the reservations.
Members of the Winnebago, Santee Sioux and Omaha tribes were to announce the launching of the campaign today. They will need to collect about 115,000 signatures by July 7 to put the measure on the general election ballot. The tribes, which have dubbed their effort the Nebraska Tribal Self-Reliance Initiative, are working with the Omaha consulting firm Affirmative Public Policy Solutions. Ben Thompson, a policy consultant working with the tribes, did not immediately return a message seeking comment Wednesday.
