Senecas Expanding Buffalo Casino, No Word On Permanent Structure
Seneca Gaming Corp. began to expand their temporary casino in Buffalo, New York on Monday when they broke ground on what will be 5,300 in additional gaming space. They gave no indication, however, to whether or not they will complete their permanent casino.
Last summer, the Senecas stopped construction on their permanent casino because of economic concerns. The economy in the US had just taken a dive, and credit markets tightened, causing the company to re-think their move to a permanent facility.
The temporary structure has been in place and operational despite a battle over its legality. While the case is going through the court system, the Senecas have won the right to keep the casino open. The legal battle has been going on for a while, and some believe it will last much longer.
Meanwhile, the Senecas have about a six year window to decide what to do with the permanent facility. The steel beams that are already up can last up to six years before they must be replaced. Some of the beams have already started to rust, even though they were only put up last year.
The decision to move forward with the permanent facility will fall on the board of directors for the company. They have not indicated a time frame for when that decision will be made, but the improving economic conditions in the US may weigh heavily on when that decision to proceed is made.
The additional gaming space will be good news for some Buffalo residents. additional employees will be hired by the casino that currently has about fifty workers.
