The Kansas casino expansion projects that were approved several years ago have turned into a nightmare of a soap opera from gaming officials in the state. Now, the regulators will once again go back to the drawing board after the latest developer pulled out of a deal.
The developers for the Chisholm Creek Casino Resort in Sumner County decided to pull out of their agreement after being denied an extension from the state. The group was attempting to wait out the process of lawmakers possibly lowering the investment minimum for potential developers.
In the time since the group announced their plans, seven different entities have expressed interest in bringing the casino to Sumner County. Many of these developers are repeat offenders, having bid on the casino in past years.
That leaves the state with another decision, and that has proven to be a dangerous proposition. The first time the state chose developers for four state-owned casinos, three of the four pulled out of their deals. The economic recession and the dried up credit market had a lot to do with those broken deals.
The only casino that is currently operating out of the four zones is the Dodge City casino. Kansas officials are hoping that an improved economy will help them finally find the right developer for their Sumner casino.
The location of the new casino seems to be narrowed down to turnpike exits at Mulvane and Wellington. Other locations have been mentioned, but the two turnpike exits appear to be the area that has been tabbed as the most likely place for a casino to succeed.
