Shawnee Indian Tribe Loses Lawsuit for Casino Gambling in Ohio
The Shawnee Indian Tribe in Ohio attempted to bring casino gambling to their reservation by filing a lawsuit that would allow them to do as they please on their site. The judge in the case saw through the efforts and ruled against the tribe's lawsuit.
The Indian Tribe sued Ohio two years ago over a land dispute and that may have been the downfall in the case because the judge ruled that he would not want to rule on a land dispute in a lawsuit.
The attorney's against the tribe claimed a big victory saying, "if Indian gaming is ever to exist in the state of Ohio, it will only come by way of the Constitution and state and federal law, not by sham lawsuits." The statement was made by Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann.
This is one of the few cases in which Indian tribes have been prevented from expanding their gambling empires. In Florida the Seminole casinos have 2 major casinos and they just purchased the entire Hard Rock chain.
About the Shawnee Indian Tribe
The Shawnee lived along the Ohio River but moved north and west in the 1700s after clashes with Europeans. The U.S. Army forced the tribe to relocate first to Missouri and then Oklahoma. The Shawnee splintered into smaller groups, and the 2,300 members of the Eastern Shawnee are scattered throughout the country. Tribal names are reflected today in Ohio city names such as Piqua and Wapakoneta.
