Singapore Becoming Leading Casino Resort Destination
Singapore is receiving much attention these days and is being touted as the next big casino resort destination, according to several gambling industry insiders.
Las Vegas Sands will build a $3.6 billion dollar casino resort in Singapore that is set to open in 2009. Singapore has chosen to build mega-casino resorts instead of traditional gambling houses that will have trouble attracting tourists.
Singaporeans engaged in an unusual public debate about whether to build casinos, with many citizens fearing the gambling resorts could undermine the country's reputation for safety and clean living. Government leaders and the local media usually refer to the projects as "integrated resorts", a label that downplays the prominence of the casinos.
Singapore will have lower tax rates on gambling revenue than most other Asian gambling areas including Macau, and 60% of the world's population is within a five-hour flight of the city.
