Smoking Is Back But Gambling Is Not For Atlantic City Casinos
What is left for casino owners in Atlantic City to complain about. They had a smoking ban overturned because they convinced city officials that they could not survive without smokers. Now they are finding out that they might not survive with the smokers either.
Revenue figures have been released this week and Atlantic City's eleven casinos had revenue decrease by almost ten percent in January. The decrease is in the same time span, January 2008 compared to January 2009.
"Amazing that they (casino owners) said that the reason they needed to keep our health in danger was because smoking drove their business. Well what the h*ll is their excuse now," said a disgruntled dealer at one of the casinos in the city.
This past January, casinos won $211.6 million on slots. That figure is down drastically from the 2008 January numbers. Their table game numbers did not fare much better, they were down 9.1% from the previous year.
Ironically enough, one of the casinos that is in the most financial danger is the one that posted an increase in revenue from one year to the next. Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort revenue was up nearly ten percent from the previous year.
Resorts Atlantic City took the worst hit out of all the casinos. They had revenue down over twenty five percent and that is not good news for a casino that is staring bankruptcy square in the face.
