Soboba Casino Warned To Stop Violence Or Risk Closure
The Soboba Casino has been dealing with violent episodes for a while now. The National Indian Commission has had their eye on the casino, and now has issued a warning that the casino eliminate the violence or face the prospects of being closed down.
There have been several incidents that have led to the decision of the Commission to intervene. Most notably, a couple had an hour long battle with Riverside sheriffs. The battle ended in the couple being fatally shot.
It has not been easy for the casino to keep the violence away. They have been locked in a battle with Riverside sheriffs over jurisdiction over the casino. The tribe cut funds for law enforcement on the reservation, and the backlash has been a string of violent episodes.
"Closure of the facility might be necessary," said Phil Hogen, the Gaming Commission Chairman. Although closure of the casino is an option, it likely would only occur in the worst of scenarios. The Commission is hoping the casino can stop the violence.
"Things have changed, and there have been no incidents for weeks," said Fernando Herrera, CalFire/Riverside County Captain. The fire department is now once again responding to calls from the facility. They agree with law enforcement officials that the violence has slowed as of late.
The sheriff's union warned earlier this month that the casino might not be safe after three tribal members were killed in separate violent episodes on the reservation.
