Stardust Casino Shuts Doors, Plans Mid-November Auction
The infamous Stardust Hotel and Casino on the fabulous Las Vegas Strip shut its doors today and is planning to auction off its remains from Novemeber 17-21.
Tony Tauebel, the general manager of the Stardust, has been taking inventory of everything that has worth in his casino for the past year. He now has a pile of 70,000 items that will be available for auction.
"I've opened two properties but I've never closed one before," said Taeubel.
The slot machines are about the only things off limits to the public, Taubel told us, because they are not allowed to be owned by citizens according to Nevada state laws. They will be distributed to other properties on the strip that are owned by Stardust parent company Boyd Gaming.
Some valuable items to be sold will be craps, blackjack, and roulette tables. Also popular as collectibles are the casino chips because they are required to be destroyed, therefore anyone in possession of chips after the bulk have them have been destroyed will have a collectors item of higher value.
"There are all kinds of nooks and crannies to this place. We really didn't know what we had until we started taking stock," Taeubel said.
While walking through the casino with a reporter Taeubel found a door he had not seen in a while and tried to open it.
"Maybe we'll find... Jimmy Hoffa," he joked, referring to the teamsters union boss who has been missing for years now. But Taeubel's key to the door didn't work, so the remains in the room will forever be a mystery.
The Stardust will be demolished and a multi-billion dollar casino and hotel resort will be built in its spot. The new casino is meant to rival the new high end casinos in the area like the Wynn.
