State Revenue For Tribal Casinos Down In Arizona

While tribal gaming has been up throughout the US, with more Indian tribe casinos than ever, the news has not been as good for the state of Arizona. Tribal contributions to the state were down almost ten percent in the second quarter.

The state of Arizona relies heavily on revenue that comes from the state's twenty-two tribal casinos. In the second quarter, revenue generated for the state was down 9.4%, to around $23.5 million. The decrease is from the same period last year.

"I don't think this will become a trend," said analyst Bill Zephers, "it was just an off-quarter, and the tribal casinos have done well in the past, so I think they will rebound strongly in the next couple of months."

Of course, that is not guaranteed because of the state of the economy. Many casinos around the country are experiencing much worse drop offs than the tribal casinos found in Arizona. Atlantic City casinos have had double digit decreases in revenue for several months.

Las Vegas, the gambling capital of the US, is also experienced sharp declines in revenue. Sin City has never really had to deal with the effects of the economy before, but this time around, the recession is hitting Nevada casinos hard.

Non-tribal casino companies are struggling also. Several companies, including Trump Entertainment Resorts, have filed for bankruptcy protection. Other companies are on that same path.
