State Tracks Increase Marketing Efforts
The Colorado horse and dog racing industry is hoping to lure more families to the tracks this summer, facing an aging population of fans and competition from both mountain casinos and online gambling. Officials with Aurora-based Mile High Racing & Entertainment said they will be heavily promoting its Front Range venues as a place to bring children for free.
"We're not ashamed that gambling goes on here, but that's not the big thing we're pushing. It's family entertainment," Bruce Seymore, director of racing operations Mile High, told the Rocky Mountain News. Mile High operates five Front Range properties, including the state's only horse track Arapahoe Park near the Aurora Reservoir and a dog track in Commerce City.
Children ages 17 and under will be admitted for free when accompanied by an adult. For adults, admission is $1 to $3, depending on the track. "We're a pretty cheap date," Seymore said. "Kids don't know if a quinella (wager) is something you eat, drink or bet on, and we're not pushing it."
