States: Gambling Profession Must do More to Halt Addiction
For many tribes in our state, casinos have provided jobs and a source of income not previously possible. It?s clear gambling has provided some positives for our state. But, legalized gambling is not without its perils. A recent series of stories that appeared in the News & Eagle bears that out. The in-depth study by CNHI News Service pointed out the good legalized gambling has done while also highlighting the not-so-good.
Some of the stories recounted were terrible. One that comes to mind is the story of Topeka, Kan., resident Kathy Bassett. Her son, who works at a casino, was arrested for stealing to support his gambling habit. Her mother, who is in her 70s, lost her life savings to gambling and had to file for bankruptcy. And, her brother, just 37, finally put an end to his gambling addiction by putting a shotgun barrel in his mouth and killing himself.
