SugarHouse Breaks Ground On New Philadelphia Casino
Last week, protests began outside the site of where the future SugarHouse Casino will be built. Those protests were only a dozen or so people. On Thursday, over 100 protesters showed up to voice their displeasure with the new casino project.
Despite the protests, developers for the SugarHouse Casino broke ground this morning. There were also many people there in support of the new casino. Bulldozers were brought in, so was a six piece band.
"Definitely there were roadblocks," said Neil Bluhm, the developer for the SugarHouse Casino, "But this is a free country and they can express their views but the vast majority of people are in favor of this project."
The casino is expected to bring many much needed jobs to a city that has been devastated by the recession. In addition to the jobs, the revenue created by the new casino will also help the city and the state of Pennsylvania.
The state has already opened new casinos this year. The Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh opened recently near Heinz Field where the Steelers play. The reviews from that casino have been positive, and developers for the SugarHouse believe the same will be true of their venture.
"I think the casino will be very good for the city," said Richard Sprague, "Whatever draws people to Philadelphia as a destination city is very good."
