The Kansas Lottery has twice awarded the rights to a Sumner County casino, and twice they have been left at the alter. Now, the state is hoping that the third time will be a charm, and they will find a developer that will follow through on their promise to build a casino in the county.
On Friday, the Lottery voted to re-open the bidding for the rights to develop the casino. Although there has been interest before, the chances of getting similar proposals from developers this time around are small.
Chisholm Creek opened the door to the new round of bidding when they pulled out of their deal to build the state-owned casino. Chisholm Creek had asked for a delay in the process, but it was not granted. Once the delay request was denied, Chisholm Creek informed the state that they were abandoning their deal.
Now, developers will once again have the opportunity to bid. Several of the developers have said they would have interest if the casino rights were again put out for bid. Now, these developers have until July 22nd to submit their applications.
There is no guarantee that the July date will be firm. The Kansas Lottery has shown time and again that they are willing to delay the process. Voters approved four state-owned casinos several years ago, and the process to find developers has been long and stressful in the years since.
The only one of the four areas approved for casino gambling that currently has an operational casino is Dodge City. The other three zones all had developers bail on their agreements after the economic recession hit in the US.
