Sun Cruise To Expand South Florida Operation
After the fatal shooting of its founder SunCruz Casinos experienced some difficult times and found itself in bankruptcy two years ago. Now, the cruise operator that is based out of Dania Beach is planning to re-emerge as the leader in the cruising industry by getting a birth at the Port of Palm Beach.
With the addition to the Palm Beach port, the cruise company would begin to rebuild its precence in South Florida, something that was lost since they pulled out of Hollywood in the spring of 2005.
It might be a difficult task to get the client base that it enjoyed before the bankruptcy, however, being that now there will be gambling alternatives in the form of the casinos that the tri-counties para mutuals have built. The legalization of Vegas slots will hurt their business a little bit.
The one advantage the ships will still have is the para mutuals do not have the right legally to host table games such as blackjack, craps, and roulette. The ships can offer these games because they sail out far enough away into international waters.
SunCruz chairman Robert Weisberg headed a group that bought the companies assets for 36.1 million. The group then turned those assets into a new company, Oceans Casino Cruises. The SunCruz name was preserved because of its well known name.
The deal that they have agreed upon is a one year deal with the Port of Palm Beach with four one year options to sail the 600 passenger SunCruz VI, the companies second largest vessel, at a minimum of 40 times a month. The agreement is set to go before the ports district board of commissioners today.
