Five groups sought the final casino gambling license in the state of Missouri, and it was expected that it would take some time to dwindle down the list. On Tuesday, however, Sunway Gaming was eliminated from consideration by the Missouri Gaming Commission.
The Commission rejected Sunway because the gaming license application turned in was ruled incomplete. With Sunway eliminated, there are now four groups left vying for the one gaming license, and each will have an opportunity to state their case.
The Gaming Commission is set to hold public hearings for the remaining four applicants. The hearings will have people on both sides of the issue voicing their support or opposition on the proposals. After the hearings are completed by the end of September, the Commission will begin to discuss which group will receive the license.
"Missouri regulators are going through this process in the hopes of finding the best applicant, and the process is new to everyone involved," said Gaming Analyst Brad Dawkins. "At least by the end of the year, Missourians should know where their next casino will be built."
Isle of Capri is considered to be the front runner for the license. Isle is proposing a $125 million casino in Cape Girardeau. The company has various gaming properties throughout the US, and they are based in St. Louis, which could help their effort to gain the license.
Paragon Gaming has proposed a $407 million casino in Sugar Creek, while North County Development has offered up a $350 million facility in Spanish Lake. Casino Celebration would like to bring another casino to St. Louis, and has proposed a $157 million project.
