The Other Casino Wynn in a Hard City for Women
There is Oscar de la Renta, who last spring opened his first boutique outside New York at the Wynns' $2. 7 billion resort, Wynn Las Vegas. There is the art dealer William Acquavella, who has helped the Wynns assemble a collection of Picassos and Matisses, from an initial purse of $150 million. And there is Michael Milken , who, before turning his interests to the fate of humanity, sold junk bonds to finance an early Wynn casino.
But while they have a privileged view of Elaine Wynn, who agreed to serve as honorary chairwoman of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's spring gala, on Wednesday at Sotheby's, it is not a unique one. None of these people live in Las Vegas.
"The change is unbelievable, even in my eyes," Phyllis McGuire, one of the reigning queens of Las Vegas, said the other day, as if referring to both Mrs. Wynn and the city. "You can come here and start a hobby and make a fortune gambling."
