Town of Middleborough Accepts Indian-Tribe Casino Offer

The town of Middleborough, Massachusetts is ready to accept $7 million per year in return for the acceptance of a new Indian-run casino gambling facility in their area. The new casino resort is expected to attract large numbers of visitors and put serious strain on the town's colonial infrastructure.

Town Manager Jack Healey called the plans "a great deal."

"This deal could secure the financial future of this town for years to come," he said yesterday. "It could take care of the town's needs."

The new deal will greatly advance the proposal of the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian tribe and its chief investors, Sol Kerzner and Len Wolman. Kerzner is well-known for his Atlantis Paradise Island project in the Bahamas, a huge success.

As part of the deal, the tribe would be precluded from considering offers from other municipalities interested in having the casino, including New Bedford, where city officials had aggressively courted the Wampanoags.

The five-member town board will hear public debate on the issue at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

A formal signing of the contract has yet to happen.
