The state of Minnesota has a big tribal community that is highly reliant on their casinos. When the economy took a turn for the worst last year, many within the Indian community worried that it could affect their livelihoods.

So far, the tribal casinos have weathered the economic storm. revenue at the casinos have dropped, but not as far as some of the national averages. The Minnesota Indian Gaming Commission estimates that three to five percent has been the revenue decrease since the fall.

"Tribal casino have held their own through this economic climate and that is something many casinos in the country cannot say. If they continue to keep their costs down, there is a chance these casinos will come out of this financial disaster just fine,' said observer Lawrence Grudy.

The question of how the tribal casinos have survived was answered by operators of several Minnesota casinos to the Star Tribune of Minneapolis. They told the paper they have left vacant jobs unfilled, saving costs in the employment area.

It is mandatory that the casinos continue to run at near maximum capabilities. Reservations in the state use the revenue money generated for education, medical care, and housing. Many members are also employees at the casinos.

Layoffs have been few and far between, although there have been some. It is almost impossible with the economy the way it is for any company to survive without at least a minimal amount of firings.
