Land Purchase Near DeKalb Could be Another Casino Gamble
The Illinois property is in the congressional district of U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, who has previously said he opposes a casino in Shabbona. A spokesman for Hastert did not immediately return a call on Monday seeking comment. Establishing an off-reservation casino requires a lengthy review process at the federal and state level that takes years to complete. But it would bypass the Illinois Gaming Board because it does not require a state gaming license. The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act prohibits gambling on land acquired after 1988, but the secretary of the U.S. Department of Interior can grant an exception after considering whether the plan is in the best interests of the tribes and not detrimental to surrounding communities.
