Tribes Talk with Government Officials
The meetings come at a time when many issues that could affect the future of tribal nations are in play. Among the issues: U. S. Congress: Legislation to deal with so-called reservation shopping. It could affect where tribes may open casinos and potentially create competition among existing tribes. Gaming machines: The U. S. Department of Justice and National Indian Gaming Commission are working on regulations to establish the difference between slot machines and electronic video games.
Tax-exempt bonds: The Internal Revenue Service has been reviewing the use by some tribes of tax-exempt bonds to finance development including hotels. Operating rules: NIGC is revising internal rules involving casino operations, which could touch on a range of functions, from methods of removing money from machines to casino surveillance.
