Tribes say Impoverished Reservations Need Gambling Revenue
Leaders of three American Indian tribes in Nebraska argued Thursday that legalizing casino gambling in the state would benefit their impoverished reservations and help provide employment for their residents. The tribes are uniting behind a petition that, if successful, would put a question on the November ballot legalizing one tribally run casino off of reservation land.
The tribes -- Winnebago, Santee Sioux and Omaha -- could also operate casinos on their land. "We would like to become self-sufficient, self-supporting," said Eleanor Baxter, chairwoman of the Omaha tribe at a news conference outside the Capitol. There is between 60 percent and 70 percent unemployment on the reservation, she said.
