Turkish Company Sets October Open Date For Guyana Casino
The government in Guyana went against strong opposition from religious groups and licensed a Turkish company earlier this year to bring a casino to the area. Now, the company believes the casino will be open for business by October.
The worldwide movement to expand casino gambling continues this year in Guyana. There are currently no casinos, but the government has laid the groundwork for expansion in the future. Any hotel with more than 150 rooms is eligible for a casino license.
Guyana is trying to improve the tourism business. There are only just over 750,000 people that live in the country, but upwards of 200,000 people a year visit. The casinos are being used as a way to generate revenue.
"Guyana is like any other country in the way that the recession is hurting them financially," said observer Kevin Glaus, "so it makes perfect sense that they would take the same steps that the US and other countries are taking, and expand casino gambling."
One of the positives that could come out of the casino expansion could be the creation of jobs. Princess Group Hotels & Casinos, which will be investing $2 million to bring the first casino to Guyana, expects their Princess Casino Guyana to create about 150 employment opportunities.
The downfall of the casino industry to start will be the regulations surrounding the gambling. Only hotel guests will be allowed to play in the casino, even though the casino will be located near the capital of the country, Georgetown.
