Gambling is more prevalent around the world today than at any other time in history. The economic conditions are adding to the growing number of gamblers, and residents of the UK are examples of how gambling is being used to cope.
The global economy has just went through one of the worst recessions in history, and gambling has been used as a way for many governments to add tax revenue to their budgets. The UK has one of the most active Internet and land-based gambling industries in the world, and research says it is getting bigger.
The Credit Action charity has done research that shows that one in ten adults in the UK are using gambling as a supplement to their work income. Money won from gambling is being used for paying bills and surviving the recession.
"They have to pay their mortgage and electricity bills," said Chris Tapp of Credit Action, as reported by BBC News, "But they don't know where to get the finance to do that if they haven't got enough at the end of the month."
In the US, gambling has been a saving grace for many families. While other industries are laying off workers, the gambling industry is hiring employees by the thousands. Many states have legalized casino gambling, and the jobs created from construction to permanent casino work has kept thousands out of the unemployment lines.
Online gambling has become another hot topic in the US. Lawmakers are seeking to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. If these lawmakers succeed, millions of dollars in revenue from Internet gambling taxes would flow to the US government.
