UK Study Claims Smoking Bans Not Related To Bingo Gambling
Bingo halls are having trouble staying a float all across the United States. The popularity of poker and other recreational activity has had an adverse effect on the game of bingo.
Many people believe that expanded smoking laws that have been put in place throughout the country have hurt bingo halls, but a study from the University of Kentucky disputes that claim.
The University of Kentucky's College of Public Health has commissioned a study that produced results that claim that smoking bans have had little or no effect on bingo halls where charity events are held. The halls are used by band boosters and sports teams to help fund their operations.
Fuel prices and unemployment have been bigger factors in the decrease of bingo hall gambling than the smoking laws. People do not have the money they used to have to spend on entertainment, and gas prices are keeping people from traveling when they do not need to.
Lexington officials are in the process of trying to have bingo parlors exempt from the new smoking laws. It is obvious by this measure that official beliefs are contrary to the Kentucky study.
Thirteen different counties in the state were used in the study. It compared revenues before and after smoking laws went into effect in the areas.
