Ukraine Casino Workers Not Accepting Of New Gambling Law

President Viktor Yushchenko of Ukraine received notice on Monday of just how untied people within the casino gambling industry can be. Hundreds of casino workers and casino owners protested outside of Yuscchenko's office on Monday.

The protest happened because of a new Bill that is being proposed that would temporarily shut down all gambling in the Ukraine. The president is aiming to have all gambling operations moved to certain zones, away from the main city.

members of Parliament approved the Bill late last week, and they contend it is for the good of the citizens of the Ukraine. The lawmakers are attempting to curb a growing gambling addiction problem.

"Let's do it step by step," said Anatoliy Nesterenko, the head of the Ukrainian Casino Association, at a news conference, "let's not throw people out onto the street."

The financial crisis is bad in the Ukraine and the Association is concerned about the over 200,000 jobs that would be lost if the ban went into effect. They are calling on the president to veto the Bill.

Instead of simply shutting down the casinos, the industry leaders have proposed several solutions for lawmakers to consider. One of which would shut casinos down at an earlier time.
