The days of the Indian tribes imposing their will on their employees in casinos have come to an end in Connecticut. On Saturday, bartenders and other workers became the latest group to vote in favor of unionization.

Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun are the two major casino resorts in Connecticut, and they both will now have to deal with negotiations with union officials. Previously, dealers at Foxwoods decided to join a union, and now bartenders, servers, and other service workers have done the same.

"These employees have had enough of having to put up with whatever rules the casinos enforce," said Gaming Analyst Brad Dawkins. "Unions are a way for the workers to have a voice without fear that they will lose their jobs."

This is an important time for the casino industry in the Northeast. Pennsylvania has become the top gaming destination in the areas, and Connecticut and New Jersey casinos are looking for ways to slow Pennsylvania's momentum.

Atlantic City used to be the only place in the Northeast where dealers could go to make a living. The emergence of Connecticut, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania casinos, however, have given workers options they never have had in the past.

Many AC casino workers voted in favor of joining unions in recent years, and now it appears that employees at casinos in other states are intent on doing the same. The Connecticut Indian tribes that run the casinos have attempted to keep unions out, but they have run out of legal options in blocking the union votes.
