US Casino Gambling Revenues Rebounding, Thanks To Bad December
Casinos around the US are feeling good about themselves for the first time in many months. While they are putting on a brave face, the reality of what is happening is being pushed to the back burner.
Many casinos around the country are reporting revenue increases in the month of January. The main reason for these increases is the dismal month of December that was had. Still, the casinos are moving forward with the idea that they are making progress.
One example of this false sense of security is in Mississippi. The State Tax Commission showed a revenue increase of almost $17 million in January. That, however, was compared to December of 2008. In December the casino revenue was reported at $204.3 million, as opposed to $221 million in January.
The bigger picture shows a different image. The January figure from 2009 was down $3 million from the same month a year earlier. What this shows is that the 2008 December casino win was even worse than the December from the year before.
That fact made the January figure from this year look even better. Mississippi is not the only state that has had this type of revenue increase in January. Louisiana also saw their first month revenue increase over December, and so have several other states' casinos.
All casinos around the US have been experiencing major slowdowns in business since the economy has taken a turn for the worst. Las Vegas, the casino gambling capital of the world, has not even been immune, with their casinos losing millions of dollars compared to past years.
